During the 1940's the RAF Central Medical Board (RAFCMB) was established at Lahore, to conduct the medical examination and assessment of aircrew for flying fitness. The RAFCMB was shifted to Delhi in July 1942. The RIAF Central Medical Board (RIAFCMB) became IAF Central Medical board (IAFCMB) in 1949 when all Royal Air Force personnel left India and w.e.f 01 Apr 58 this Unit was further, designated as AF Central Medical Establishment (AFCME).

The motto of AFCME is "Shakti Mulam Swastham" means 'Health is the root of strength'. AFCME is a compact and specialised medical evaluation centre for aircrew of all the three services of the Armed Forces, the paramilitary organizations, Government agencies and Civil Aviation. In addition, the Establishment also provides specialist OPD, diagnostic and therapeutic services to the serving and retired Air Force personnel and their families.
