" There are only three sports: bullfighting, motor racing, and mountaineering; all the rest are merely games."
- Ernest Hemingway
INTRODUCTIONAir Force lays stress on physical fitness, games, sports and adventure with the aim of increasing productivity of air warriors. Participation in adventure and allied out door activities promote leadership, courage, vigor, sense of self growth and enhances sense of camaraderie and esprit de corps.
Adventure in Air Force is aimed to create avenues for broad-basing adventure activities and thereby transform adventure from mere recreational activity to a powerful Human resource Development tool. These activities also have motivational value to serving personnel, their families as well as general public. They have served favourably in promoting and enhancing the Air Force image in India as well as abroad and have motivated youth to join the Indian Air Force.
BRIEF HISTORYAdventure sports started in the Air Force in an organized manner with the formation of the Air Force Trekking, Mountaineering and Skiing Association (AFTMSA) in 1952. Activities gradually increased and this association became popular. Air Force Adventure Cell was formed in 1984 with activities manifold. The Air Force Adventure Foundation was formed in Mar 1986 and graduated to a full fledged Directorate in Oct 1986.
Adventures are seekers. Their quests for the unknown lure them towards greater challenges and thus are legends. All those who join Air Force do have spirit of Adventure. IAF has often been the pioneering role model for various organizations promoting adventure sports and conservation and development of the nation’s ecology. In a unique fusion of these traditions, the Air Force organizes several adventure activities which is a conglomeration of multi faced, multi dimensional adventure and research activities. This include spectrum of disciplines on land, in air and water. Secondly, it introduces our personnel to activities which people try and if they have affinity or aptitude, pursue. Thirdly, the Dte is always on the lookout for ‘The bigger, higher and more difficult’ things.
AIMThe main Aim of the Dte of Adventure are:-
To promote adventure as an effective human resource development tool in IAF.
To broad base adventure activities and maximise participation of officers, airmen, NCs(E) and their families.
To glorify the image of IAF through displays and demonstrations throughout the country.
To motivate Indian youth to make IAF as their career option by boosting IAF publicity and recruitment campaign.
To strive for excellence in National and International events.
To survey, procure and maintain state of art of adventure equipment and ensure its availability to our personnel.
